Abstract<\/strong>
Following Quijano’s coloniality of power, Lugones’s coloniality of gender and Torres-Maldonado’s coloniality of being, I propose here the use of an explicit \u00abcoloniality of space\u00bb that can be applied to different historical circumstances and geographical scales.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The increasingly unequal, unjust and often violent uses of space constitute a key perspective to explain the current dynamics of capitalism and the plight of many people living in some particularly affected areas. I characterise these areas as \u00abextreme spaces\u00bb, in the double sense of being on the margins and at the margins of the central processes of capitalism. They may be urban margins, but they may also be sacrifice zones, enclaves of confinement or borderlands.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

My purpose is to examine the apparent paradox that while these extreme spaces (spaces outside capitalism, as some say) appear to be indispensable to the functioning of the whole system, the people who inhabit them are virtually invisible and their lives are considered disposable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This has been examined in the light of a logic that goes back to early capitalism in the form of original accumulation, now taken up in neoliberalism as a logic of dispossession and expulsion. However, to take the argument to its ultimate spatial consequences, I propose to characterize these extreme spaces explicitly as colonial spaces. Undecipherable as they may appear, they are combination of processes of dispossession, stigmatisation and repression but also of resistances and alternative forms of survival.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n
